he client is a US-headquartered global market research company, ranked among the Top 10, with over 2,000 enterprise clients in the retail industry. Its data and analytics expertise allows its enterprise customers to make decisions around sales, marketing, distribution, assortments, and product planning. The company has acquired several corporations in the course of its existence of more than 50 years.
4,500+ POS systems were sending different data points for ingestion, forcing the client to invest two weeks in every ingestion cycle. This latency resulted in delays in providing insights to its enterprise customers. The challenge had to be addressed in addition to delays caused for new customer onboarding, issues around data quality which impacted the research output, legacy integrations affecting productivity, and the massive cost overheads of manual POS profiling that resulted in bottom-line erosion.

The client had been using a data processing framework built using Ab Initio Express>It. This resulted in millions of dollars spent on licensing and development costs to perform the ETL operations which were required to handle the complex configurations of its retail customers. Further, there were 700+ retailer codes in a legacy Syncsort system which added to the maintenance costs.
After analyzing the issues and gaps in data management that were impacting the efficiency and costs of the client’s processes, Marlabs proposed a Big Data Management POC to build a unified data ingestion engine. Trifacta Designer Cloud was chosen over a Python framework after a thorough evaluation.
Compared to Ab Initio Express>It and Syncsort, Trifacta is lightweight, budget-friendly, and user-friendly. It has a built-in AI-driven simulation that helps users choose the right transformation logic. With its rich UI/UX, Trifacta also enables end users to do most of the changes which were possible in Ab Initio Express>It only through coding. As part of the project, 1,400+ POS flows were migrated from Ab Initio Express>It and legacy Syncsort systems to the Trifacta environment.
Across five years of the engagement, Marlabs has attended 300+ daily scrum calls with the client’s US team, turned over 715 Data Feed Partners to the production team, converted 657 ACE and 740 Syncsort preps over to Trifecta, produced an extensive documentation library in OneNote, created a knowledge transfer curriculum with 30+ hours of training (for a new M&A team), loaded (and reloaded) countless volumes of back data, and, as the client observed in a communication to the Marlab’s team, “became an excellent partner to the numerous teams, especially the legacy DI Dev team.”
The solutions created by Marlabs had the required impact. Retailer onboarding issues were reduced drastically by ~12% YoY while onboarding retailers improved from ~5 weeks to 1 week. Considerable savings were unlocked. The data enrichment process contributed ~$300,000 YoY, and the reduction in manual effort resulted in savings of ~$2 million across two years.
Ab Initio Express>It was decommissioned at the end of the Trifacta implementation. This resulted in saving annual licensing costs of ~$1.5 million. In addition, development and enhancement efforts that were required to cater to different retailer file handling have been entirely eliminated. This has resulted in an annual saving of ~$ 600,000. The Syncsort legacy system will be decommissioned by the end of 2023.
Some of the additional benefits the migration created were moving data and knowledge from individuals to a common repository and opening new business avenues through data synchronization with retailer POS.
