he client is a $22 billion, US-based, Irish-domiciled medical equipment company specializing in sterilization and surgical products for the US healthcare system.
Sterilizers and washers, key products that make up the client’s business, typically require a large room to operate that must be temperature controlled. Not all hospitals can spare rooms for these devices. In addition, these devices are expensive, resulting in limiting the customer base for the client. Without a new business model that solved the space and budget challenges faced by smaller hospitals, the client would not be able to grow.

After examining the client’s challenge, Marlabs leveraged an IoT solution to change the client’s business model to help it reach more hospitals.
The solution created for the hospital was in two parts. The first involved creating trailer-based mobile sterilizers and washer units that could be attached to trucks. This lets the units move across geographies. These trailers, equipped with HVCA (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, can be parked in a hospital’s parking lot and can be controllable remotely (see Figures 1 and 2). The second part of the solution involved connecting the devices in the trailers to a Universal Controller Board (UCB) that let the hospital acquire real-time data for the devices. Together, the solutions helped the client change its business from a sales model to a subscription-based (pay-per-use) model.
The solution let a growing number of smaller hospitals opt for the client’s sterilization devices. Power BI was used to provide customers access to the usage data, of the sterilizers and washer units, on a mobile device.
ThingWorx, a market leader with end-to-end purpose-built industrial IoT solution platforms, was used to connect the devices and visualize them. The platform let us create the solution within a week (instead of the two months such solutions normally take).
The client increased its customer base by 3X after the solution was launched. Since customers had direct access to their usage data via a mobile app, they could analyze their usage.
By using ML, Marlabs created potential failure models that helped in the predictive maintenance of the devices, bringing down failure by 60% and downtime by 65%.
The IoT solution lets the client troubleshoot remotely, identify failures accurately, and dispatch technicians for a first-time-right fix. The system also lets the client assign the right technician automatically and sends an alert to the technician. To help the technician understand device variants, Marlabs used an AR app.
One of the hidden outcomes of the solution was that hospitals could upgrade themselves without having to sacrifice precious real estate.
