The start-up’s ambitious goal was to create an online social media platform and mobile app to support millions of individuals impacted by drug and alcohol addiction. This project resonated deeply with key stakeholders who had personal connections to those in recovery and rehabilitation. Microsoft, too, shared this vision and provided extensive support, including technology, sales, marketing, sponsorship, and PR assistance.
Despite the immense scope of the project and the start-up’s limited budget, they aimed to develop a highly scalable and available architecture. This posed a significant challenge for Marlabs, as they needed to create a cost-effective solution to accommodate rapid growth while maintaining resilience.

To address the start-up’s needs, Marlabs began by conducting workshops with the CTO and other stakeholders to fully understand the Client’s goals and challenges. During these workshops, Marlabs donned an advisory role. They counseled the start-up on product selection and cost-conscious technology choices, ensuring the platform’s foundation would be solid and sustainable.
Throughout the development process, Marlabs utilized design thinking, out-of-the-box approaches, and client workshops to foster creativity and innovation. This collaborative and iterative process enabled Marlabs to create a tailored solution that met the Client’s unique requirements while staying within budget constraints.
Marlabs devised a solution based on their Cloud Framework (MCF) for App Innovation, which leverages cloud-native technologies and enables organizations to build and run scalable applications in the cloud. The architecture employed an Azure-hosted multi-region deployment model–with containerized microservices, server-less functions, polyglot persistence over Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Gremlin DB, and Mongo DB–the architecture provided high performance, scalability, resiliency, and availability. Furthermore, the platform incorporated AI-based content moderation through Azure Content Moderator, ensuring that users would find a safe and supportive environment. The proposed solution received accolades from the Microsoft team consulting with the Client.
To ensure that the platform would effectively guide users through their journey from addiction to sobriety, Marlabs organized the platform’s content and features around seven key pillars: Help and Information, Group Support, Treatment and Recovery, Community, Relaunch, Sober Lifestyle, and Inspiration. By offering a comprehensive range of resources and support, the platform aimed to demonstrate that sobriety is possible, sustainable, and rewarding.
The social networking platform, developed by Marlabs, offered a wide array of features designed to engage users and provide support throughout their recovery journey. These features included community pages, partner pages, self-service pages, support groups, and a “Find Treatment” option that allowed users to search for nearby treatment facilities. The platform also planned to lay the foundation for an eCommerce portal in the future, expanding its capabilities and providing additional resources for users.
In January 2022, the platform was successfully launched, and the start-up began sharing it with its team, investors, friends, and family. The positive feedback from these early users laid the groundwork for an upcoming, significant marketing push involving media coverage, press releases, and celebrity endorsements. This marketing campaign aims to raise awareness about the platform and encourage those affected by addiction to take advantage of its valuable resources and support.
The platform can potentially address the critical need for early intervention, treatment, and ongoing management for individuals struggling with addiction. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, only about 1 in 10 people with a substance use disorder receive any specialty treatment, highlighting the urgent need for accessible and effective interventions.

The platform uses various media, such as music, videos, and blogs, to deliver its message and inspire users. It also features partnerships with celebrity figures, including Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, who share their stories of recovery and success.
